Preparation for General Education


To succeed in general education courses, students must be prepared at a college level in English language, reading, writing, mathematics, and applicable sciences. Pima Community College provides coursework numbered 001-099 which is known as Developmental Coursework and does not apply to a certificate or degree.

  • Developmental Education Coursework- coursework numbered 001-099 provides foundational skills and abilities for success in gateway courses across multiple pathways, as well as a strong foundation for future success in curricula covering mathematics, reading, applicable sciences, and writing.
  • Remedial Coursework- coursework numbered 001-099 in the subjects of Math (MAT), Reading (REA), Writing (WRT), Academic and Critical Literacy (ACL), and Integrated College Skills (ICS) are required to be at least at the high school level. This is determined by Pima Community College, its state legal authority, its accrediting agency, or a state agency recognized for approving public postsecondary vocational education.
  • English as a Second Language Coursework- coursework numbered 001-099 in English as a Second Language (ESL) is intended for non-native speakers who wish to enhance their English communication, reading, and writing skills, whether for general, professional, or academic purposes.
  • Supplemental Coursework - coursework numbered 001-099 is not classified as Developmental, Remedial, or ESL coursework.
